Strawberry Granny Stitch Pattern
Yarn Needed:
• Red, green, and white yarn (preferably the same type for consistency)
• White yarn can be replaced with any color you want for the background of the strawberry.
• The red yarn can also be substituted with different colors, like pink or blue, for a unique look.
Abbreviations:
• Chain (ch)
• Double crochet(s) (dc)
• Stitch(es) (st)
• Strawberry granny square (sgs)
• Yarn over (yo)
Instructions:
1. White Yarn:
• Start a dc in the chain space or stitch where you’ll place your strawberry granny square (sgs).
• Yarn over, insert your hook into the st or ch, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through 2 loops.
• Switch to red yarn.
2. Red Yarn:
• Finish the dc with red yarn by pulling the red yarn through the last 2 loops to complete the first dc.
• Make 5 dc into the same st.
• Pull the hook out of the red loop, leaving the loop intact.
• Insert the hook in-between the post of the first and second dc (under the horizontal attachment piece), then reinsert the hook back into the red loop. Your hook should now be behind the 5 dc stitches.
3. Green Yarn:
• Pull up a loop through the red loop and the post of the first and second dc.
• Continue inserting the hook into the posts of the next 4 dc stitches, pulling up a loop with each. Keep the loops loose. You should have 5 green loops on your hook.
• Yarn over and pull through all 5 green loops. Drop the green yarn, but keep the green loop on the hook.
4. White Yarn:
• Grab the white yarn from the back, yarn over, and pull up a white loop through the green loop.
• Keeping the white yarn on your hook, tighten the green yarn to cinch the top of the “strawberry.”
• Finish the sgs by making another dc into the same ch space or stitch.
Finishing Options:
• Crochet over the excess yarn on the last st. You can continue crocheting over the red and green yarn to the next sgs if desired.
• For the cleanest finish, consider cutting the yarn after each sgs, despite the extra ends to weave in. This method reduces the stretch of the square and allows for better shaping of each strawberry. To achieve a sharper point at the bottom of the strawberry and a perfectly puckered top, cinch the ends as you tie them in.
