Supplies

2-7 colors of matching weighted yarn

Crochet Hook size correlated with yarn size

Scissors 

Darning needle (optional to sew in ends)


Stitches (U.S. terminology)

CH- Chain

SS- Slip Stitch

SC- Single Crochet

HDC- Half Double Crochet

DC- Double Crochet

STDC- Standing Double Crochet

TR- Treble Crochet

FPHDC- Front Post Half Double Crochet

FPDC- Front Post Double Crochet

STFPDC- Standing Front Post Double Crochet

BPDC- Back Post Double Crochet 


Using Color A, we will begin crocheting the skull


1: Creat Magic Ring, working into magic ring, STDC, 8 DC, (ch3, DC into magic ring) x 2, ch 3, ss into top of STDC. 


2: Ch 1, 4 SC, 2 SC into same stitch, 4 SC, working into the ch 3 space, 5 SC, ss into next ch 3 space, ch 2 [3 DC, ch 2, ss] into second chain 3 space, working into final ch 3 space, 5 SC, ss into top of first SC. Cut yarn


Using Color B, Starting the square:


This round gets tricky so pay close attention, I will break down this round by 4 sections to try and make it easier for you. 


3a: starting in the top of the SC after the previous ss, ch 2, Tr (this will be the last half of corner 1), 2 FPDC, 3 FPHDC, 

2 FPDC, now making your second corner working into the top of the stitch [tr, ch 2, tr] into the top of previous stitch, 




3b: 2 FPDC, starting to work the around the eye, 3 FPHDC, 1FPDC, third corner working into the top of the stitch [DC, Tr, ch 2, Tr] FPTr, FPTr around (ss, ch2)




3c: You are now working the jaw, 3 FPSC, FPTr around the (ch 2, ss), FPTr, fourth corner working into the top of the stitch [Tr, ch 2 Tr, DC] 



4d: FPDC, You are now working the eye, 3 FPHDC, FPDC, you are now finishing the first corner, into the same stitch you put your first Tr, [Dc, Tr, ch 2] ss into top of first Tr to finish round. Cut

  • you should have 9 stitches on each side 



For the following rounds, ss with a color change alternating your colors to your liking. 

  • if you want a smaller square, in the following rounds, swap out the DCs, FPDCs and BPDCs for HDCs, FPHDCs and BPHDCs. With a size 5mm hook and 4 worsted weight yarn my large square is 9.5” x 9.5”; my smaller square is 6.5” x 6.5”


4: STDC, dc into corner, (9 bpdc, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] into corner) x 3, 9 bpdc, 2 dc into final corner, ch 2, ss into top of STDC with color change. 



5: into corner, STDC, 1 dc, (1 fpdc, 11 bpdc, 1 fpdc, into corner [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]) x 3, 1 fpdc, 11 bpdc, 1 fpdc, 2 dc into final corner, ch 2, ss into top of STDC with color change. 



6: into corner, STDC, 1 dc, (17 fpdc, into corner [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc])x 3, 17 fpdc, into final corner 2 dc ch, 2, ss with color change to finish round. 



7: Into corner, STDC, 1 dc, (4 fpdc, 13 bpdc, 4 fpdc, into corner [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]) x 3, 4 fpdc, 13 bpdc, 4 fpdc, 2 dc into final corner, ch 2, ss into top of STDC with color change. 



8:  into corner, STDC, 1 dc, (25 fpdc, into corner [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc])x 3, 25 fpdc, into final corner 2 dc ch, 2, ss to finish. 



Cut and sew in all ends. I prefer to sew in my ends as I go so it is less work when I’m done. 


Pro Tip: make sure to block or stretch your stitches to prevent curling it
